Man Utd told to complete Sergio Ramos transfer after Thiago Silva’s Chelsea success

Manchester United should take a leaf out of Chelsea’s book by looking to sign an experienced defender like Sergio Ramos, according to Dimitar Berbatov. Ramos has little over six months remaining on his contract at Real Madrid and will soon be able to talk with prospective clubs about a move away from the Bernabeu when the deal expires.

The Spain international is said to be demanding a two-year contract with Real currently weighing up their options.

But their reluctance to give into Ramos’ demands has led to speculation on where Ramos could go if he does end up leaving.

A move to the Premier League has been touted as a possibility, with a host of clubs said to be interested.

United are reportedly among those considering a move, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to bring in a new central defender to partner Harry Maguire.

Despite being 34 years of age, Ramos remains one of the best central defenders in Europe.

Chelsea made a similar move this past summer in signing the vastly experienced Thiago Silva after his contract expired at Paris Saint-Germain.

And the Brazilian has made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea conceding just two goals in his previous seven appearances.

Berbatov believes Ramos would have a similar impact at United, although he does think the centre-back will end up staying at Real.

“There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Sergio Ramos, according to reports both the player and club are yet to come to an agreement on a new contract,” Berbatov told Betfair.

“With Ramos 34 years old, they are probably fighting over a one-year or two-year contract.

“Thiago Silva, who is even older at 36 years old, has proven that it is never too late to move to the Premier League and so far it is working out well for the Brazilian.

“I’m sure if Ramos wanted to move to a club like United then it would work out well for him too.

“He’s in great shape, he’s still a world-class defender and in my opinion there’s still a lot of football left in him.

“I see him as a Real Madrid player, however, and I think player and club will find a solution and he will stay.

“I’ll be surprised if he leaves, but if things don’t work out then I’m sure a lot of clubs will be interested in him.”
