Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer after Chelsea failed with a move this summer.
United are one of a host of European giants hoping to sign the Norwegian striker in 2022 when the release clause in his contract becomes active.
Chelsea had made a bid for the 21-year-old earlier this summer but after it was rejected chose to sign Romelu Lukaku instead for a club record fee.
Haaland's exit from Dortmund next summer is understood to be a guarantee and will not be affected by the club's performance domestically and in Europe this season.
According to Bild, United are currently in pole position to sign Haaland next summer, when his agent Mino Raiola will trigger the clause in his contract to activate his release clause.
This release clause is believed to be valued at £64million and the decision to activate it will not be affected by BVB's performance this season, even if they win the Bundesliga.
Chelsea had hoped to steal a march on the clubs waiting for the release clause by making an approach for Haaland earlier in the summer but saw their bid rejected.
Reports also suggest that they were priced out of the move by the financial demands of Raiola who asked for a £275million package that included a salary for himself and wages worth more than £800,000-a-week for Haaland.

As a result, Chelsea turned their focus to other targets and re-signed Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku earlier this month instead.
Haaland joined Dortmund from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg back in January 2020 for £18million and has so far scored a staggering 62 goals in 63 appearances.
This record has ramped up the interest in the youngster from across Europe and Raiola met with five clubs earlier this year alongside Haaland's father Alf-Inge, formerly of Leeds United, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest.
The duo met with representatives from Real Madrid, Barcelona, United, Chelsea and City as they explored Haaland's transfer options.
However, it now appears that only City and United could be in the race to sign Haaland next summer, with United in pole thanks to his connection with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer gave Haaland his professional debut during their time at Molde and it is understood that their relationship was a factor in the manager's latest contract extension.
Barcelona have since seemed to withdraw from the race due to their financial issues, which saw Lionel Messi leave the club this summer.
Real Madrid are currently pursuing a move for Kylian Mbappe this summer, while Chelsea have just recently splashed out on the signing of Lukaku.
This only leaves City and United, who are both eyeing a new striker, with City having been linked with Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane all summer to no avail.
