Man Utd ‘have deal well underway’ for De Gea replacement after Man City defeat

De Gea gives update on Man Utd future ahead of Sevilla match

Manchester United have a deal ‘well underway’ for Diogo Costa, according to reports in Portugal. The Red Devils’ need for a new goalkeeper was evident on Saturday as David De Gea suffered in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City. And while he’s widely expected to sign a new contract with the club, Erik ten Hag has hinted he won’t be guaranteed a starting berth next term.

De Gea didn’t dive for Ilkay Gundogan’s opener on Saturday, with the City star scoring after just 13 seconds.

And the Spain international should have done better with the midfielder’s second goal, too, with a tame shot beating him from the edge of the box.

De Gea has blown hot and cold for United this season and there are fears he’s simply not suited to the style of play Ten Hag wants.

And A Bola claim the Red Devils have a deal for Costa ‘well underway’ as the club seek an upgrade in this summer’s transfer window.

The Porto star has been linked with a move to United all season long.

Though he looked shaky at the World Cup in Qatar, the Portugal international is regarded as one of the most—promising goalkeepers around.

The report says Costa will definitely leave Porto this summer.

And it seems as though he’s closing in on a move to United, despite the club also being linked with Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.

De Gea is still expected to stay at United, with Ten Hag making it clear he values the 32-year-old for his experience.

But, after seeing his side lose to City at Wembley, the Dutchman did admit there are ‘issues’ when it comes to his current No 1.

“In this moment, I don’t want to talk about such issues of criticism because we all played a great season – including David de Gea,” he said.

“He played a fantastic season.”

Yet the 53-year-old, when pressed on De Gea’s poor distribution, added: “Say it like this: we are in the right direction.

“But there are occasions in the game, issues in the game, we have to improve, definitely, if we want to make the next step and win trophies.”

Earlier in the week, Ten Hag had admitted he wouldn’t guarantee De Gea the No 1 shirt next season.

“I will not say he’ll always be my No.1 because in a club like Man Utd there must be competition in all positions,” he said at the club’s end of season awards ceremony.

“You can’t do it with 11 players.

“It is impossible. You need double positions.”

Meanwhile, former United captain Roy Keane has admitted he’s ‘sick’ of saying his old side need an upgrade on De Gea.

“United have got to get a new goalkeeper and a world-class striker. I’m sick of saying it,” he said.

“United need a world-class goalkeeper, and he isn’t.”

United could lose four other goalkeepers this summer.

The club may cash in on Dean Henderson, with the England international wanted by Nottingham Forest after a positive loan spell.

Tom Heaton could also depart, with the veteran barely playing since his return to the club two years ago.

Jack Butland is expected to return to Crystal Palace, having moved on loan back in January.

And it’s unclear what will happen with Nathan Bishop, too.
