Man Utd fans spot Eric Bailly moment that justifies Bruno Fernandes comment

Man Utd v Wolves: Match in pictures

Manchester United fans praised a crucial intervention from Eric Bailly as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat Wolves on Tuesday. Bailly was named man of the match by team-mate Bruno Fernandes after a win which lifted the Red Devils to second in the Premier League.

United fans were quick to pick up on the defender’s contribution at Old Trafford, with one moment in particular standing out.

Just before half-time, with the score still 0-0, Fernandes was dispossessed in the Wolves half, leading to a rapid counter-attack from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

As Neto was released down United’s left flank with Harry Maguire in pursuit, the rapid Adama Traore sprinted forward in support, leaving Aaron Wan-Bissaka eating dust.

Maguire didn’t catch Neto, but Bailly had also raced back and was able to cut out a pass from Neto which otherwise would have found Traore clear on goal.

It was just one of a number of interventions the 26-year-old made as United kept a second clean sheet in their last three games.

The game looked to be heading for what would have been a frustrating 0-0 draw until Fernandes set up Marcus Rashford for an injury-time winner.

And fans praised Bailly for his part in giving Solskjaer’s attacking players the platform for a fourth win in their last five games.

Responding to a clip posted on Reddit of Bailly’s crucial contribution, one fan described him as “an incredible defender when fit”, while another said it showed “how much we miss pace when Maguire and Lindelof play together”.

Some supporters pointed out that Neto’s pass was poor, enabling Bailly to cut out the danger.

But another fan hit back, saying: “Bailly was smart and giving himself enough space to cover the two danger areas… He blocked off Neto and as soon as he played the pass (which Bailly was expecting) he shifted his feet and turned his attention to Adama. Brilliant defending.”

After the game, in which Bailly made just his third Premier League start of the season, the defender took to Twitter to say: “A clean sheet and a victory. Good way to end a year to forget. We are coming for you, 2021.”

Fernandes responded to Bailly’s tweet saying: “My man of the match.”
