Manchester United fans have shown little sympathy for Cristiano Ronaldo after his contract was ripped up by the club.

The Red Devils released a statement on Tuesday evening announcing that the Portuguese legend would be leaving by "mutual agreement with immediate effect."

It read: "The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch."

The stunning news came after Ronaldo's highly controversial interview with Piers Morgan, where he criticised the club hierarchy, manager Erik ten Hag and even the Red Devils' training ground chef. And the United faithful have welcomed news of his departure on Twitter.

One fan wrote: "Glad Ronaldo has gone. He’s my GOAT and I love him, but I love my team more. So good riddance."

Another brutally commented: "What a sad ending, he has burnt his legacy into ashes, selfish, greedy, dishonest, ungrateful player he is, he deserves this and more."

A third bluntly wrote: "Finished player," while a fourth added: "Goodbye and nobody is going to miss him…snitch!!"

It comes despite Ronaldo issuing a statement of his own where he professed his love for United and the fans, claiming it "feels like the right time to seek a new challenge" while "wishing Man Utd all the best."

Ronaldo ends his second stint at Old Trafford with 27 goals in 54 appearances following his transfer from Juventus in summer 2021.
