Ahead of Manchester United’s match with Villarreal on Tuesday night, plenty questioned the team selection of interim manager Michael Carrick, but the performance of Fred justified his inclusion.

United parted company with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday following a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford, and many were desperate for a reaction from the talented squad.

And those fans were not disappointed against Unai Emery’s Villarreal.

Cristiano Ronaldo kept up his impressive record of scoring in every Champions League game so far this campaign when he lofted a perfect chip over goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli following some great pressing from Fred.

The Red Devils then ensured their spot in the knockout stages thanks to a thunderous strike from summer signing Jadon Sancho after the ball who smashed the ball in off the bar from just inside the box.

The ball was recovered from Sancho’s goal by, again, Fred, which will come as a surprise to most considering how heavily criticised the Brazilian has been in the past few months.

But the United faithful were as loud in their praise for their midfielder as they were with their criticism previously.

“Man Utd almost look like they have been given instructions on what to do tonight. Have to say, I think Fred has been excellent tonight – what the hell is happening,” wrote one Twitter user.

Another joked: “Michael Carrick getting a man of the match performance out of Fred in his first game? Give him a four-year contract in my opinion.”

“Without Fred, neither of those two goals would’ve happened. He gets mocked a lot, but he was superb tonight,” added another.

One supporter even believes the former flop could develop into one of the most popular figures at Old Trafford in time, and tweeted: “Unpopular opinion: Fred will ball under a different coach and in a more fluid system. Give him the perfect midfield partner and he’ll become a fan’s favourite.”

Real Madrid hero Zinedine Zidane, Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers and Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino have all been linked with the managerial vacancy at the Theatre of Dreams but it remains to be seen whether any of the aforementioned are appointed.
