Man Utd buy-out takes new twist as Ratcliffe lays down transfer demand

Man Utd boss Ten Hag discusses Rashford's position

Manchester United takeover hopeful Jim Ratcliffe reportedly wants oversight of transfer dealings from the moment a potential £5billion deal to buy the Red Devils is agreed. Ratcliffe is one of the frontrunners for a majority purchase of the Premier League club and is reported to have submitted the most lucrative offer.

The latest round of bidding is believed to have included offers from Britain’s richest man and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani. Ratcliffe’s proposal is apparently worth around £5bn – close to the valuation initially set by the Glazer family.

However, Ratcliffe has reportedly demanded to have full control of transfers from the moment his offer is given the green light. Meanwhile, Sheikh Jassim supposedly wants an even wider amount of control over club affairs.

It is claimed that the Glazers are unlikely to accept requests for control before the completion of a possible sale.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the requests from Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim would see the Glazers would need to run any financial commitment past the incoming owners. There is apparently scepticism over whether that scenario would be legally and theoretically possible.

However, it is apparently common for such requests to be made during other commercial dealings, away from transfer business. Approval rights are often granted to incoming owners to ensure a company’s accounts are not drained.

The report adds that the Glazers – the siblings who own 69 per cent of the club – are unlikely to accept such a demand. They could still decide to remain at Old Trafford as majority owners – a move that will not be popular among fans.

Demands made by Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim supposedly suggest that both major bids expect the process to go long into the summer transfer window and beyond. The Glazers have already taken plenty of time assessing the proposals and announcing several rounds of bidding.

Ratcliffe, who also owns French club Nice, is making his offer through his company INEOS. Sheikh Jassim’s bid is being made through his Nine Two Foundation.

United are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window. A lack of squad depth, especially in attack, saw them fall away from the title race as early as the new year.

A new striker is high on Erik ten Hag’s wish list ahead of the window opening in early June. England captain Harry Kane has been linked with a club-record transfer to the Red Devils.
