Man Utd boss Ten Hag may be set for ultimate transfer blow after Man City loss

Erik ten Hag previews FA Cup final

It’s an open secret that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is desperate to land Harry Kane this summer. However, with Karim Benzema leaving Real Madrid, the La Liga giants have apparently registered an interest in the Tottenham striker. Missing out on the 29-year-old would be a catastrophic blow, with the Red Devils in need of reinforcements if they’re to close the gap on Manchester City in the wake of Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat.

Manchester United pressed City all the way in Saturday’s FA Cup showdown at Wembley.

But while Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty for the Red Devils, a brace from Ilkay Gundogan ultimately gifted Guardiola’s side the trophy.

United, for the final, decided to use Marcus Rashford down the middle.

But while their best attacker this season posed a threat with his pace, it’s clear he’s better-suited to playing out wide instead.

This is something Ten Hag is well aware of already. And that’s why he’s so eager to sign Kane in this summer’s transfer window.

The England international is one of the best strikers in the whole of world football, and has been for well over a decade.

Kane would bring a new dimension to United’s attack and there’s a sense wingers such as Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho would all improve with the Tottenham striker playing up top.

Yet now there’s a problem – because of Real Madrid.

Benzema will be leaving the La Liga giants behind after 14 years and five Champions League triumphs, with the Frenchman poised to move to Saudi Arabia.

He will be a rival to Cristiano Ronaldo out in the Middle East, with the duo previously allies for nine years at the Bernabeu.

And talkSPORT say Carlo Ancelotti is eager to sign Kane from Tottenham as a replacement as they look to win the Champions League and La Liga next season.

For United, and Ten Hag, that represents a substantial blow.

Tottenham would prefer to sell Kane to a European side, instead of a domestic one, which works in Real’s favour.

And while Kane is believed to want to stay in England to pursue Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record, the prospect of wearing Real’s famous white kit could be too tough to turn down.

United have been here before, of course.

They wanted to sign Benzema themselves in 2009, once it became clear Ronaldo would be leaving Old Trafford.

However, Real then hijacked a deal and Benzema moved to the Bernabeu instead – with the rest history.

Tottenham have refused to let a single player move to United ever since Dimitar Berbatov crossed the divide back in 2008.

Gareth Bale and Luka Modric were both sold to Real, despite Sir Alex Ferguson dreaming of deals for both players.

And United were denied deals for Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier by Daniel Levy as well.

Should the Red Devils miss out on Kane, they’ll be forced back to the drawing board.

And what ultimately happens with the Tottenham hitman, as the summer transfer window approaches, remains to be seen.

Speaking recently, meanwhile, Kane played down speculation over his future.

“No, no. That’s part and parcel of being a footballer – especially when you’re at the top of your game,” he said when asked if anything had changed.

“I’ve just been focusing on this season and trying to help the team as much as possible.

“To score a couple [against Leeds] today was nice, to finish that way, but all in all I’m just looking forward to a nice break and then a couple of games with England.”
