It’s that time again where Liverpool must summon the European spirits at Anfield to pull off another iconic comeback and book their place in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Reds trail 3-1 to Real Madrid following a lacklustre first leg in the Spanish capital, and must now fight back without their 12th man of a packed Spion Kop. Goals from Vinicius Jnr and Marco Asensio have Madrid’s noses in front, while Mohamed Salah managed to find the back of the net for Liverpool.

Very interesting selections. Klopp again opts to bench Thiago, with veteran star James Milner coming in alongside Fabinho and Wijnaldum.

Up top, the prolific Diogo Jota makes way and Roberto Firmino is in.

The in-form Vinicius starts up top again for Madrid, flanking Benzema along with Asensio. The tough-tackling Fede Valverde fills in at full-back after Lucas Vasquez was ruled out for the season in the recent Clasico.

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Kabak, Robertson, Milner, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Subs: Thiago, Keita, Adrian, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jota, Tsimikas, Shaqiri, Ben Davies, Rhys Williams, Harvey Davies, Cain, Clarkson.

Real Madrid: Courtois, Valverde, Eder Militao, Nacho, Mendy, Modric, Casemiro, Kroos, Asensio, Benzema, Vinicius Junior.

Subs: Marcelo, Lunin, Odriozola, Isco, Mariano, Rodrygo, Altube, Park, Arribas, Chust.

Referee: Bjorn Kuipers (Holland).

Spirits are high among the Spanish press.

Today’s front page of Marca carried the mocked up image of Madrid player’s recreating the famous Abbey Road cover.

Interesting link… Beatles… Liverpool… except the picture was shot in London, outside Abbey Road studios.

Each to their own, though.

Liverpool knew as soon as they drew Real Madrid they would be the underdogs in this fixture, given the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez being out for the season.

It’s a very unconventional Liverpool team but Klopp made one huge gamble in the first leg… he trusted Naby Keita with a starting berth for the first time since December.

To say it backfired would be an understatement, as Sportsmail’s DOM KING explains…

You join us tonight at Anfield and, well, we’ve been here before haven’t we?

This stadium, this competition, the wild hopes of millions placed upon a football team who need to upset all the odds.

Liverpool are back on Merseyside and need to pull off a comeback for the ages once again. Two goals without reply would do it tonight – but we all know that’s much easier said than done.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are tasked with the most impossible of missions, yet this time they must pull it off without supporters roaring down from the terraces.

The Reds have numerous key men out, and the famous 12th man isn’t here. It’s a huge ask.

They couldn’t… could they?
