Liverpool tipped to complete major transfer due to ‘complacency’ in squad in Leeds win

Liverpool “missed a trick” when they opted against signing Timo Werner this summer, and should move to sign a new centre-back due to Virgil van Dijk’s complacency against Leeds United. That’s the opinion of former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, who claimed Jurgen Klopp can’t rely on Fabinho as a fourth-choice defender.

Liverpool looked poor at the back on Saturday as they started their Premier League title defence with a thrilling win over newly-promoted Leeds United.

The Reds took an early lead through Mohamed Salah, but Leeds levelled the scoring through Jack Harrison just minutes later.

The winger skipped past Trent Alexander-Arnold before slamming the ball past Alisson Becker.

Van Dijk put Liverpool back into the lead again with a powerful header, but then handed the ball on a plate to Patrick Bamford for the Leeds ace to make it 2-2.

The usually unflappable centre-back flicked the ball down instead of clearing it after a long ball up field, and Bamford was free to roll the ball past Becker.

That was the worst of a series of defensive errors for Liverpool, and Crouch believes the Reds need to address the issues of complacency.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Crouch claimed Liverpool should decide to sign a new centre-back to provide competition for Van Dijk.

He claimed the Dutchman’s mistake could have come as a result of complacency, and a new defender would shake things up at Anfield.

Crouch wrote: “They have got three great players in Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip but I believe they could do with another addition there, as I wouldn’t want to see Fabinho used as the fourth-choice central defender.

“Look at the second goal they conceded, to Patrick Bamford.

“It was a rare mistake by Van Dijk that had a hint of complacency about it.

“Does he make the same mistake if Liverpool have signed a central defender this summer and pressure is being applied to his place?

“Competition raises your standards by an extra one or two per cent.

“There are only so many times Mohamed Salah, who bailed out his team, and Sadio Mane can produce heroics.

“Adding another midfielder — such as Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara — or back-up striker would be welcomed.

“I have a feeling they missed a trick not getting Timo Werner.”
