Liverpool set to allow defender to leave despite centre-back injury crisis

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to let Sepp van den Berg depart on loan in the January window – despite the club's ongoing centre-back injury crisis.

The Reds have seen each of their senior options in central defence succumb to injury this season, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees and Joel Matip suffering a series of minor complaints.

The crisis has propelled 19-year-old Rhys Williams and Under-23 player Nat Phillips into the first-team spotlight.

Van den Berg, 19, has spent most of the season with the Under-23s but has also been named on the bench by Jurgen Klopp as centre-back cover.

And while the club has been forced to field natural midfielder Fabinho at the heart of defence, Van den Berg will be allowed to leave on loan this month, according to Goal .

The report adds clubs in Belgium and Switzerland's top flights and Germany's 2. Bundesliga are interested in the player, who helped the Reds clinch the Club World Cup in 2019.

Liverpool are keen for the Netherlands Under-19 international to pick up regular minutes during a loan spell to continue his development.

Anfield chiefs have noted Williams and Phillips both benefitted from loans last season, and the pair have helped plug the holes in defence this campaign.

Williams spent time with National League North club Kidderminster, while Phillips joined Stuttgart in 2. Bundesliga.

Meanwhile, Van den Berg joined the Reds in a £1.3m move from Dutch club PEC Zwolle in the summer of 2019, but has managed just four senior appearances, each of which came in the domestic cups.

His debut came against MK Dons in the Carabao Cup in late 2019, while he made his first start in the entertaining 5-5 draw with Arsenal in the fourth round of the competition.

Will Liverpool regret it if they let Sepp van den Berg depart on loan? Have your say in the comments.
