Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, according to reports. The Catalan giants are looking to get the 2018 World Cup winner off the books in order to free up funds for a summer spending spree. But while a move to Anfield has been mooted, it currently looks unlikely.

Liverpool are looking for a new centre-back this summer.

Though they’ve currently got the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on the books, Jurgen Klopp feels his side need strengthening in that area.

And Anfield Central claim Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona star Umtiti by the player’s agent.

It’s claimed the representative is gouging the mood around Europe when it comes to his client, also contacting Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus, Lyon and Lille.

But Liverpool, for their part, aren’t interested – despite the player being available for just £6million.

It’s said the Reds ‘politely rejected the offer’ with Ibrahima Konate poised to arrive from RB Leipzig for a fee of £40m at the end of the season instead.

Liverpool were said to have been ready to turn Umtiti down regardless of what happens with Konate amid fears over his injury record.

The Barcelona star has suffered 12 separate injuries since moving to Spain back in the summer transfer window of 2016 and, this season, he’s made just 12 appearances in La Liga.

Umtiti’s wages of £208,000-a-week are also too excessive for Klopp’s side, who have a wage structure in place.

And where the Barcelona star ends up remains to be seen.

Lionel Messi’s Barcelona anger explained

Ronald Koeman’s side are determined to improve their squad this summer, while also holding out hope Lionel Messi will sign a new contract with the club.

Messi wanted to leave Catalonia behind a year ago, publicly confirming this.

But he was prevented from leaving Barcelona by former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who insisted he was contractually obliged to continue for another year.

The bulk of the La Liga giants’ finances are likely to go towards keeping Messi, who remains as vital as ever having scored 28 league goals this season.

That’s seven more than Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and eight more than Gerard Moreno of Villarreal.

Barcelona do, however, intend to recruit by utilising the free agent market.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is widely expected to leave Anfield behind to play under Koeman, who previously managed him at international level.

Manchester United flop Memphis Depay is also in their sights, having rebuilt his career at Lyon following his departure from Old Trafford in January 2017.

And they’re also hopeful of snapping up Eric Garcia, whose time at Manchester City seems to be winding down.

Speaking earlier in the season, Umtiti insisted he wanted to stay at Barcelona – though did suggest he’d be open to returning to Lyon one day.

“I don’t see myself at any club than Barca,” said Umtiti in an interview with Canal Football.

“I’ve been pretty clear about that with everyone.”

“Lyon is my club, my city. They were the team that gave me the chance to play in Europe, at Barca and in the national team.

“There were conversations with Lyon this summer, but there was nothing in concrete.”

Umtiti then added: “The last two years have been the worst of my career. I’ve never worked so hard. I need to make up for lost time.”
