Liverpool legend questions "disturbing" claim from Clattenburg over Man Utd

Ex-Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has really been stirring the pot ahead of Liverpool's top of the table clash against Man Utd on Sunday.

First the former official branded Jurgen Klopp a "hypocrite" after the Liverpool manager's comments about United always winning penalties.

And it appears Clattenburg has now dropped himself in it, by suggesting there was a bias towards United when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

"He [Klopp] is wrong to suggest there is an aura around United that sees them given favourable decisions." Clattenburg said.

"There used to be when Fergie was there, but that has eased massively since he left."

Ferguson had a reputation for getting on the backs of the officials and hounding their decisions during his time in the dugout.

And ex-Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has raised his concerns over Clattenburg's comments.

"Pretty disturbing to hear that from someone who refereed during Ferguson’s reign, admitting there used to be bias towards Man United," Hamann tweeted.

It's been an extremely interesting start to the season for Jurgen Klopp's men.

They got their title defence off to a shaky start as they edged out a seven-goal thriller against Leeds, before going on to conceded seven in a hammering by Aston Villa.

Virgil van Dijk's season was ended by injury in the 2-2 draw at Everton, leaving the title favourites looking far less secure at the back – especially with Alisson's injury worries too.

But there's no slowing down in what is going to be a busy campaign – with Klopp ensuring his men continue at full pace as they bid for more title glory.

Even Fergie he might be surprised by how many penalties United have been awarded in recent seasons.

As Klopp noted, the Red Devils have been given more spot kicks in the last two campaigns than Liverpool have in his entire five-and-a-half year stint in charge on Merseyside.

Clattenburg has agreed with Klopp's findings, but insists it is not down to favouritism.

Who will win between Liverpool and Man Utd on Sunday? Have your say below.

"Jurgen Klopp must be getting worried, because his comments last week about Manchester United and penalties were straight out of Sir Alex Ferguson's playbook," he told Mail Online .

"It was mind games — an attempt to influence referee Paul Tierney and get inside his head before a huge match between Liverpool and United this Sunday.

"But let's be clear: there is no conspiracy on the part of referees and officials. Was Klopp insinuating there is? Or was he suggesting United have players who are encouraged to dive?"
