Liverpool already have ‘clone of Steven Gerrard’ in Jordan Henderson

Liverpool's next six Premier League fixtures

Jordan Henderson has been previously described as a ‘clone of Steven Gerrard’ by young team mate Harvey Elliott and the 32-year-old could pick up a mentor role if Liverpool signs Jude Bellingham. Gerrard guided Henderson through his first years at Anfield helping him to develop into the inspirational captain he is today and now he can do the same for Bellingham if he arrives.

Henderson is nothing short of a Liverpool legend having made 480 appearances for the club since joining from Sunderland in 2011. He led the Reds to Champions League glory in 2019 but may forever be best remembered as the man who finally lifted the Premier League trophy for Liverpool after 30 years without title-winning success.

However, Henderson’s performances have started to drop off this season and there is a real chance he could lose his starting place over the summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to transform his midfield. That does not mean his importance will wain as the 32-year-old’s experience is vital in helping his younger team mates to progress.

Bellingham is someone who could massively benefit from Henderson if he was to join from Borussia Dortmund. The teenager has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield and is believed to be one of Klopp’s top targets.

Bellingham has already shown immense leadership qualities, regularly pulling on the armband for Dortmund this season. Should he make the move to Merseyside he will be widely tipped to inherit the Liverpool captaincy once Henderson moves on.

In the meantime, he will have the opportunity to learn directly from Henderson as the Liverpool captain takes on more of a mentoring role as his minutes are reduced. The duo already enjoy a good relationship from their time together with England and can build on that at Anfield.

Henderson’s role mentoring Bellingham would be similar to how Gerrard acted towards the 32-year-old when he made the move from Sunderland. Gerrard took Henderson under his wing while he was still a youngster helping him to develop into the man who inherited the armband from him when he left the club in 2015.

Henderson has already been compared to Gerrard by those inside Anfield and the parallels may continue if Bellingham joins. Harvey Elliott has been one of his captain’s biggest supporters describing him as a ‘clone of Gerrard’.

“I don’t think people (outside the club) appreciate Henderson as much as they should,” Elliott told the Counter Attack podcast in 2021.”He is an absolute legend on and off the pitch. I can’t say enough about him, he is a top captain and what everyone wants in a captain.

“He is a leader on and off the pitch. He doesn’t do it for the reaction, he does it because he wants to have an effect on things and put them in line and show everyone can be on the some page – he brings people with him.

“He greeted me well, he has always taken me under his wing and given me a kick up the arse when I’ve needed one. He is like a clone of Steven Gerrard, really.”

Henderson’s importance to Liverpool has been obvious over the last 12 years and he will remain a valuable presence on, but especially off, the field for many years to come.
