Liverpool agree £30.5m deal to secure summer signing

Liverpool are set to complete a £30.5 million deal to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate, according to reports.

The Premier League champions have been rocked by long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip this season, and as a result Jurgen Klopp is keen to improve his defensive options in the summer window.

Konate, meanwhile, has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most promising young defenders following his impressive performances for RB Leipzig.

Konate has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United.

But according to The Guardian, Liverpool have won the race to sign the French defender and are expected to finalise a deal for the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims that Konate has agreed a five-year contract with Liverpool, while Klopp’s side will pay the player’s €35m (£30.5m) release clause.

It’s also claimed that Klopp has been monitoring Konate’s progress ‘for some time’.

Speaking last month, RB Leipzig’s sporting director Markus Krosche claimed that Liverpool ‘is not an option’ for the French defender.

‘I can’t say anything on that topic. I think that this is not an option for Ibu,’ Krosche told Stats Perform News.

‘He has a long contract with us and he knows what we mean to him and what he means to us.

‘He was unlucky last year as he had a longer injury but this year he is in a good way and he is an extremely important player that has a lot of potential.

‘We want to help him to further develop, and we play internationally, have a very good team, so I don’t see a reason for him to leave us.’
