Liverpool are reportedly a ‘main contender’ to sign Juventus defender Merih Demiral. Liverpool are heavily linked with a move for RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate. But the interest in Demiral could potentially cast doubt over that deal.

Konate could cost Liverpool up to £40million as Jurgen Klopp aims to strengthen his defensive resources which have been ravaged by injuries this season.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both set to be fit for the start of next season following their respective knee injuries.

Joel Matip is also set to return at some point in the close season following his ankle problem.

Reports also claim Liverpool are set to activate their clause to make Ozan Kabak’s loan deal permanent.

Add Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams into the equation and Klopp will have six central defenders to choose from.

Ben Davies is another option, but he has not played a single minute since his arrival from Preston in January.

Therefore it seems unlikely Liverpool would look to sign a further two defenders in the summer window.

TuttoJuve.com claim the Reds are keen on Juventus’ Turkey international Demiral, who has previously been linked with Arsenal.

Klopp would likely have to sell at least one, if not more, centre-back if he were to bring in both Demiral and Konate.

However, the report also names Manchester City, Real Madrid, Tottenham, Everton and Atletico Madrid as other clubs interested in Demiral.

Demiral joined Juve from Sassuolo in 2019 but injured his anterior cruciate ligament six months into his time with the Old Lady.

The 23-year-old has made 10 starts in Serie A this season, with Juve set to miss out on the title for the first time in 10 years.

Demiral’s current deal at Juventus does not expire until 2024.

Meanwhile, there have been conflicting reports over the release clause in Konate’s contract.

The Telegraph claim Liverpool may have to stump up as much as £40m to sign the 21-year-old.

Konate has had a string of injury problems himself during his professional career.

The France under-21 international missed the majority of last season due to a torn muscle fibre.

An ankle injury kept him out of action for almost two months earlier in this campaign.
