Lionel Messi almost wiped out by steward as star signs pitch invader’s bare back

Lionel Messi is often the star of the show when he makes an appearance on the pitch – and some fans just cannot help themselves.

That included one supporter at the Red Bull Arena in New York, who raced onto the turf to get his hero's signature. Topless, the fan might not have thought through the whole process.

As he got to the 35-year-old, he handed him a pen and begged the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner to sign his back. That was just seconds before a horde of stewards wrestled him to the ground as a dumbstruck Messi nearly got barrelled into the bundle as a result.

It happened on a fine night for the Paris Saint-Germain forward, who scored twice in a 3-0 win for Argentina against Jamaica. The first came in trademark style, driving towards goal before finding the bottom corner with a fine strike just outside the box.

The second was another that Messi has made a career of – a magical free-kick. The set-piece was expertly bent around the wall and into the corner that sent the American crowd into hysteria.

Messi's brace made him the third-highest scorer in men's international football. It took him to 90 goals for Argentina, but he still has a while to go to reach Cristiano Ronaldo's total of 107.

The Albiceleste have one match left before the World Cup gets underway in November, taking on the United Arab Emirates on November 16. Messi has never won the World Cup but Argentina are seen as one of the favourites this year.

Lionel Scaloni's men start their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia just six days later, while their group also contains Mexico and Poland.
