Laurent Blanc insists Lyon have ‘guaranteed’ star right-back Malo Gusto will be STAYING with the club past January after they rejected the Blues initial bid, dashing Graham Potter and Chelsea’s hopes of splashing more cash in the transfer window
- The Chelsea target looks unlikely to be an addition to their January spending
- Earlier this week, Lyon’s president Jean-Michel Aulas said he would not leave
- Fellow star Rayan Cherki seems to be staying put with the French giants
Lyon manager Laurent Blanc has shot down Chelsea’s hopes of signing talented right-back Malo Gusto during the January transfer window.
Graham Potter’s side had hoped to bring in the 19-year-old and take their spending for this month to well above £200m, but Blanc suggested that would not be the case.
Lyon’s president Jean-Michel Aulas had already spoken to media about Gusto remaining in France this week, prior to Blanc’s reaffirming press conference.
Chelsea have been told that Malo Gusto won’t be joining them during this month’s window
‘The board have guaranteed to me that (Rayan) Cherki and Malo Gusto will be here until the end of the season,’ Blanc told reporters on Friday.
The statement echoed the thoughts of madcap president Aulas who took to Twitter and declared Gusto would continue with the French giants beyond this transfer window.
Lyon had made clear they wanted Gusto to stay with them on loan until the end of the season but the tone of Aulas’ comments suggest a deal of any kind will have to wait.
Lyon manager Laurent Blanc will be relieved to receive assurances that Gusto will be staying
Gusto has enjoyed a superb season, and is yet another young talent starring for Les Gones
However, the Ligue 1 club have form for announcing player sales won’t be happening before going through with a deal.
Chelsea’s deals for Michael Essien in 2005 and Florent Malouda in 2007 happened after Lyon denied talks were taking place.
Similar statements preceded the sales of Karim Benzema to Real Madrid in 2009, Hugo Lloris to Tottenham in 2012, Alexandre Lacazette to Arsenal in 2017 and Memphis Depay to Barcelona in 2020 – among others.
Currently, it seems as if Graham Potter and Chelsea will be unable to prise the right-back away
Gusto has attracted interest following a breakthrough season at Lyon.
Having made his debut for Les Gones at just 17, Gusto has already racked up an impressive 54 appearances at 19, making six assists in the process.
There are still 18 months left on Gusto’s contract at the French side, and the Blues may face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United.
It came as Lyon made an enquiry to take Tottenham’s Djed Spence on loan.
Currently, Lyon are having a torrid season in Ligue 1 and sit ninth – 12 points off 4th placed Monaco and 22 behind leaders PSG.
Jean-Michel Aulas tweeted that Gusto will remain a Lyon player until at least the summer
