Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes Billy Gilmour will prove to be ‘better’ than Jorginho and will ‘replace’ the Italian at Stamford Bridge.
The Scottish youngster was given a rare start as Chelsea beat Luton Town 3-1 in a snowy west London on Sunday afternoon to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Gilmour burst onto the scene last season when he dazzled in the competition against Liverpool but injuries have stunted his progression since.
However, Hasselbaink is in no doubts about the Scot’s long-term prospects at the club and he believes Gilmour will replace Italian Jorginho.
‘I like him – he handles the ball really well,’ Hasselbaink told the BBC.
‘Chelsea bought Jorginho a few years ago but they have this boy coming through. I think he will take Jorginho’s place and become more than Jorginho. I think he is a really good talent.’
Gilmour’s minutes for Chelsea have mainly come in the cup competitions and there are doubts about his readiness for the Premier League at this time given his diminutive frame.
But Hasselbaink says Gilmour’s play belies his stature and that he has the speed of thought to make up for his small frame.
‘It doesn’t matter,’ insisted Hasselbaink.
‘If you can handle the ball, if you can compose and play forward and make a difference then it doesn’t matter how big you are. He’s playing like a ‘big man’.’
