Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool should target Mount and Mac Allister

Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool should target both Mason Mount and Alexis Mac Allister… but says the club need to ‘sort ourselves out defensively’ in order to challenge Man City for ‘big trophies’

  • Jamie Carragher questioned why fans have been ‘down on’ Mason Mount links
  • Man City have not conceded as many as Liverpool’s 43 this term in 14 seasons
  • Manchester United will launch a £55million bid for Chelsea midfielder Mount

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool need to make a number of signings this summer if they are to challenge Manchester City for the biggest titles, but has picked out two midfielders in particular.

The former Reds star implored his old club to land both Mason Mount and Alexis Mac Allister in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce their midfield for next season.

Chelsea’s Mount has been heavily linked with a Stamford Bridge exit in the upcoming window, with Manchester United also named as a potential destination should he leave the west London club.

Reports have connected the Reds and Argentinian World Cup hero Mac Allister several times in recent months, with his immediate future seemingly lying beyond Brighton.

But Carragher singled out Mount in particular for praise, questioning why some fans have been ‘down on’ the English midfielder in the past.

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool need to sign at least two midfielders in the coming window

Liverpool have been rumoured to undergo a midfield rebuild this summer after several issues with current stars

Mason Mount and Alexis Mac Allister have frequently been linked with moves away

‘Mason Mount is a funny one in that people always seem a little bit down on him for whatever reason,’ he said to the Anfield Wrap podcast.

‘I’ve never got it, I’m a huge fan. He’s a Champions League winner. I really like him. He’s got energy to press, he’d provide a greater goal threat from midfield than we have from Jordan in that position right now.’

Carragher also suggested that the club take into account Mount’s homegrown status, given that clubs are required to register a particular number of English players in their squad lists.

‘Every top manager who’s been at Chelsea has picked him,’ he added. ‘Plays for England and I think the club have also got to be thinking about that homegrown situation.’

Jorg Schmadtke is set to take on the vacant sporting director role at Anfield from June 1, and the club are expected to invest heavily in a number of areas.

Liverpool have already bid farewell to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita, with all players departing at the end of their current contracts at the club.

But Carragher believes that the area that Schmadtke and Co should target is the defence, which he argues is the difference between them and rivals Manchester City.

‘If we brought Mac Allister and Mason Mount in I’d be delighted with that,’ Carragher added.

Liverpool have struggled at the back at times this season and Carragher has urged them to reinforce in that area

The Reds legend believes Manchester City’s defensive solidity is what marks the difference between the two sides

‘I definitely want us to bring a defensive midfield player in as well, because Mount and Mac Allister are more offensive midfield players.

‘I don’t think our problem is going forward, our problem is defensively. If we’re gonna get back to where we wanna be, which is challenging Man City and challenging for big trophies, we’ve got to sort ourselves out defensively because that’s been the biggest problem this season.’

This term Jurgen Klopp’s side have let in 43 goals – 10 more than in their title-winning campaign of 2019-20, with Virgil van Dijk missing numerous games with injury this term as the Reds struggle at the back.

For comparison, City – who have won five of the last six Premier League titles – have not conceded more than 41 goals since the 2009-10 campaign.
