James McClean’s vile social media threats detailed as Stoke vow to catch abusers

Stoke City have pledged to bring to justice those who post vile threats to midfielder James McClean.

The club has issued a statement after the Derry-born star's wife highlighted the extent of abuse her husband receives.

McClean and his wife Erin have highlighted abuse, including threats to burn down their house and to take a gun to a match.

Stoke have now moved in to warn the on-line abusers that they will do everything to make sure they bring them to justice.

A statement says: "Stoke City strongly condemn the vile anti-social abuse James McClean and his family very sadly continue to find themselves subject to.

"The club wish to reiterate their continued support for James, his wife Erin and their family.

"There is no place in society for discriminatory behaviour in any form and we believe anyone who thinks it acceptable to subject people to such abuse should be held accountable for their actions."

McClean's wife , Erin, has spoken out about the abuse their family has been on the end of.

McClean has been targeted by fans during his career at West Brom, Sunderland and now Stoke for his refusal to wear a shirt with a poppy on.

The Republic of Ireland international released a lengthy statement about it on social media only last week.

His wife opened up about the 'nine years' of 'constant abuse' revealing that, among other things, someone even threatened to take a gun to a game her husband was playing in.

She said: “There isn’t a day that goes by that either one of us don’t receive a message of some sort, whether it be a threat or else telling us to get the f— out of England.”
