Iker Casillas' wife Sara Carbonero has suffered a tragic setback in her cancer battle after being readmitted to hospital.

News broke after it emerged she had been taken to a private facility in the city of Pamplona on Wednesday.

She was admitted to the University Clinic of Navarra Hospital, which is renowned for being one of the best in Spain, on Friday – just two days after her 37th birthday.

Local reports state that Casillas is taking turns with Carbonero's family to visit her.

The former Real Madrid star is yet to make a statement.

Fortunately, it has been reported that she is recovering well and is keen to get back to her daily life.

In May 2019, Sara revealed that she had been operated on for ovarian cancer.

A malignant tumour was successfully removed, shortly after a heart attack suffered by her husband, Iker.

Sara, who has two children with the Spain legend, underwent the surgery at Madrid’s prestigious Ruber International Clinic.

At the time, she wrote on Instagram: “This time it's my turn, this six-letter word that I still find hard to write.

"A few days ago at a check-up, the doctors found a malignant ovarian tumour and I have already had surgery.

"Everything went very well, fortunately we have caught it in good time, but I still have a few months of fighting left while I have the relevant treatment.

"I am calm and confident that everything is going to be OK. I know the road will be hard but also that it will have a happy ending.

"I have the support of family and friends and a great medical team.

"I want to ask that from here the media gives me the respect and understanding with which you have always treated me, especially in these difficult and delicate times for me and my family."

Casillas has since retired from football, hanging his gloves up in August last year, which he departs a legend having led Spain to World Cup glory in 2010.

He and his wife, who he married in 2016, became icons after the couple kissed on air during a post-match interview.
