Ian Wright has revealed that Arsenal are confident of making several statement signings this summer with Edu’s phone ‘ringing off the hook’ from players wanting to join the club.

The Gunners lost top spot in the Premier League table this week after Manchester City followed up their 4-1 win at the Etihad with a narrow victory away to Fulham on Saturday.

Manager Mikel Arteta has not given up on the title just yet, but City hold a one-point advantage and have a game in hand over Arsenal, with many pundits now suggesting the title race is done.

Regardless of where Arsenal finish this season, it has been a very encouraging campaign and, with a few new additions in the summer, Arteta will be confident of challenging again next season.

The north Londoners have already been linked with some big-name signings, notably West Ham’s Declan Rice – who is likely to command a British-record fee in excess of £100million.

Arsenal legend Wright recently visited the club’s training ground at London Colney and has now revealed that Arteta and Edu are very confident they can lure top-quality players to the Emirates this summer.

‘I went to the training ground the other day and I was with Edu and Mikel, and what’s happening now at the club is we’re not having to go out and cajole other people to come and join Arsenal,’ Wright told The Athletic.

‘They can see what we’re doing. Edu is saying his phone is ringing off the hook and they’re very confident about the calibre of player they’re going to sign.

‘If you’re going to challenge this City team, you’re going to have to come correct.

‘Ideally, we want to finish as high as we can — we want to win it — but I’m excited about the next phase.

‘When you speak to Edu and Mikel, everything is about winning, man. They just want to win.

‘And even with some of those games we drew it’s only because we were trying to win. It’s a new mentality. We’re trying to win games, we’re not trying to sit off and say, “Let’s hold onto this”.’

Arsenal, who take on Chelsea at the Emirates on Tuesday evening looking to reclaim top spot, are expected to pursue two new midfielders as well as defensive reinforcements in the summer.

Arteta wants a new centre-back to provide cover and competition as well as a more orthodox right-back, while Rice and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo are both on their wish list to bolster the midfield.
