Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has pleaded that it would be ‘ridiculous’ to sack manager Jose Mourinho before the end of the season.

Spurs have struggled for results recently and their 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday has seen the former Champions League winning boss undergo the worst run of results in his managerial career.

The North London side have lost five of their last six matches in the Premier League and Mourinho now has the worst win percentage of any Tottenham manager since Juande Ramos.

However, there is still some promise in cup competitions as they have their EFL Cup final against Manchester City in April and look certain to progress to the last-16 of the Europa League.

‘No I don’t, not at the moment,’ Hoddle responded when asked whether the Spurs boss should be sacked on his podcast for the Evening Standard.

‘He has been brought in to bring silverware, he is in a cup final. How can you sack somebody who has got a cup final in April? It is ridiculous. That is the reason why he has been brought in.’

Despite the return of talisman Harry Kane on the weekend, Hoddle admitted his former side looked ‘average’ in the loss to West Ham but believes Mourinho deserves the chance to turn their fortunes in the league.

‘Consistency and maybe other things have got to change over time, but I think he has earned the right with what he has done in his career to be given more time,’ continued Hoddle.

‘As much as I look at Tottenham at times and think we do look an average team. But that is other clubs as well and that can change very quickly. A couple of wins and the confidence can come back.

‘There is a lot of calls from fans [for Mourinho to be sacked] but second half against West Ham, who are flying at the moment and are a great side, every attacking option he had was on the pitch. They hit the bar, hit the post and it could have gone a different way.’
