Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has lavished praise on ‘Rolls-Royce footballer’ Ruben Loftus-Cheek and says the Chelsea midfielder is more promising than the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount.
The 24-year-old has missed most of the season with an Achilles injury that he sustained at the very end of the last campaign.
Loftus-Cheek has long been considered one of the finest players to emerge from Chelsea’s academy but he’s been denied the chance to work extensively with Lampard and has been limited to just four appearances this term.
Lampard has shown the willingness to play young players that previous Chelsea managers have not and the likes of Mount, Abraham, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori have all thrives this term.
Hudson-Odoi has struggled with injuries of his own this term but he attracted attention from Bayern Munich in 2019 and the Bundesliga giants were willing to pay £45m for the winger.
However, Sherwood believes Loftus-Cheek remains the most promising young player at Stamford Bridge.
‘Look at the young kids that he’s blooding this year,’ Sherwood told DAZN.
‘They’re gaining experience and the value that’s been placed on that group of players [will benefit them].
‘But it’s without their best one – their best kid in my opinion is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. I think he’s a Rolls-Royce of a footballer.
‘They’ve hardly had him because of injuries but he’s got back in the squad now. When he’s s fully fit next season and they’re blooding a few more of the young players that they’ve got and then they’re spending money.
‘Roman Abramovich has decided to spend money again. There’s no shame [for Lampard], he’s going to spend the money if it’s available.
‘Frank’s saving him a lot of money with other players that he’s bringing through the academy. He can go and sign some make-the-difference players. They’ve already got Timo Werner, who can score some goals from the outside left position drifting in. It all looks good for Chelsea at the minute.
After agreeing deals to sign Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Lampard will focus his attention on signing a left-back.
Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell is Lampard’s first choice but the Foxes want around £70m for the England international and the club have Champions League aspirations of their own this term.
