Graham Potter reveals he was SURPRISED Mason Mount was included in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad due to injury… as the Chelsea manager says the club will be seeking clarity over the decision

Graham Potter was surprised Mason Mount was included in Gareth Southate’s latest England squad.

Midielder Mount was selected on Thursday only for Potter to confirm 24 hours later that he would not be fit for England’s first two and upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.

Mount has missed Chelsea’s last three games due to a pubic bone injury and remains out for today’s visit of Everton.

Raheem Sterling is also absent due to a hamstring problem though he was omitted by Southgate.

Potter said: ‘I’m not aware [of any setback for Mount]. He’s never been available as far as I’m aware.

‘Yeah [I was surprised to see him named]. Probably, as a club we will [seek clarity about why he was].

‘He needed a bit of time for his injury to settle down, which pretty much ruled him out of the England thing.

‘Whether that means they needed a bit of time to double-check that, I don’t know. But I don’t think there’s anything untoward at all.

‘It’s more sometimes these things can be named but there are still a couple of days where things can be changed.

‘But as far as I was aware, from my selection perspective, he was unavailable for the weekend.’

N’Golo Kante could be included in the Chelsea squad for the first time against Everton after seven months out with a hamstring injury.
