Gary Neville was not impressed with Manchester United’s display in their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, insisting Erik ten Hag has “a lot of work to do” to get things firing. The Red Devils were fortunate to walk away with all three points in their opening game of the season against Wolves after a lacklustre display.
Ten Hag wanted to see a much-improved performance from his side in north London, but it was a similar performance as Ange Postecoglou’s side got the home fans out of their seats. United threatened on occasions but Marcus Rashford was isolated through the middle while Bruno Fernandes wasted a couple of golden opportunities.
It was defensively though where United were all at sea with Tottenham carving the visitors open too easily. Pape Matar Sarr opened the scoring for Tottenham in the second half before the hosts deservedly doubled their lead late on.
Tottenham could have had even more had they taken up better positions in the final third as United ran out of ideas towards the end. The performance left Neville concerned about the direction his former club are heading in.
He said on Sky Sports: “Manchester United were out-played, out-fought, missing in midfield, not good enough up front and at the back they gave away goals. “Well done to Spurs. Manchester United have a lot of work to do.”
Neville felt United’s biggest weakness came in midfield where Casemiro appeared overwhelmed by Tottenham’s attacking display. Mason Mount struggled to affect the game alongside the Brazilian with Christian Eriksen not fairing much better when he came on.

Scott McTominay was left on the bench with United looking to sell the Scotland international. United are still looking to bring in a new midfielder with Sofyan Amrabat strongly linked, but it’s been reported that players need to be sold first.
However, Neville is worried that United may end up missing out altogether if they don’t stump up the cash needed.
“Eriksen has come on to have the second number six option alongside Casemiro,” he added. “Ten Hag wants a number six who can play alongside Casemiro and at the moment the club can’t get players out to be able to fund that – if they look at the first two weeks of the season, they have to fund it or there will be big problems.”
