Gareth Southgate’s chat with Man Utd’s Dean Henderson opens up January move

Dean Henderson would be England’s first-choice goalkeeper if he was playing regularly at club level.

It has been reported that his position as back-up at Manchester United has cost the former Sheffield United loanee the chance to be starting regularly for his country, having made his debut during the second-half against the Republic of Ireland.

The 23-year-old made the decision to commit his future to the Red Devils in the summer despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s claims that David de Gea is the best in his position on the planet.

Henderson has only made three appearances so far this season, and none in the Premier League.

90min have now reported that Gareth Southgate has told the former Stockport County loanee that he would already be England number one if he was playing regularly for his club.

That could lead to another loan away from Old Trafford in January, with his direct competition with England Jordan Pickford struggling with his form under Carlo Ancelotti at Everton.

However, Southgate had backed Henderson’s decision to remain at United in the summer.

"I think it's an opportunity for him really," the England boss said in August.

"Of course, he could take another season out and gain another year of Premier League experience but at his age as a goalkeeper you can't just think about the international situation.

"You are building a career and here's an opportunity to challenge for the shirt at Manchester United if they are asking him to stay in the building.

"If I was him and I had the chance to push to be the Manchester United number one, then I'd make the same decision he has.

"He's got the chance to train every day in front of the manager, to influence him and put David de Gea under pressure for his place.

"I think for his career it's a logical decision given the number of matches United will have next season."

England’s final match until March goes ahead against Iceland on Wednesday, and Henderson could feature.
