Gareth Southgate insists Jordan Pickford will stay as England's No 1

Gareth Southgate insists Jordan Pickford will STAY as England’s No 1 despite being dropped by Everton as he claims there are no other goalkeepers ‘challenging seriously’

  • Gareth Southgate has once again reaffirmed his commitment to Jordan Pickford
  • His spot as England’s No 1 looks to be secure despite a series of major errors
  • Carlo Ancelotti axed him from Everton’s starting XI for the game at Newcastle
  • Dean Henderson and Nick Pope have also been included in the England squad

Gareth Southgate has thrown his unequivocal backing behind Jordan Pickford, insisting he remains England’s undisputed first choice goalkeeper.

The Everton star’s position as England’s No 1 has been cast under a shadow in recent months following a string of high-profile errors.

Indeed, his position was under the microscope again last week after Carlo Ancelotti axed him from the Toffees starting XI for the game against Newcastle, though the Italian insists Pickford will start against Manchester United this weekend.

But Southgate is adamant Pickford remains his first choice keeper – and even indicated the Everton star is well clear of his nearest competitors Nick Pope and Dean Henderson.

He said: ‘When people say I have been loyal to him he has deserved that. His performances have been excellent for us and so that has not been a difficult decision for me.

‘We have some competition for places but I would have to say that there is nobody who I think is challenging seriously at the moment to push him out of that position.

‘In terms of how his club is looking after him, he has a hugely experienced manager there who has won everything in the game and he is in a very good place for that.’
