Gakpo: Liverpool's new forward line are getting used to each other

Cody Gakpo has revealed that Liverpool’s front-three had found it ‘difficult’ to play with one another, after he bagged a brace in their huge win over Man United. 

Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all scored twice in the 7-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday. 

The Dutchman’s superb finish from Liverpool’s first attempt on target gave the hosts the half-time lead.

Within five minutes of the restart it was over as a contest with Nunez’s header making it 2-0 after some comical defending allowed Harvey Elliott to cross and a lightning counter-attack led by Salah ended with Gakpo finishing in style for 3-0.

Salah rifled in Liverpool’s fourth in the 66th minute and Nunez then sent another header past helpless goalkeeper David De Gea in the 75th.

Salah rubbed salt into United wounds with a close-range effort to and Roberto Firmino then came off the bench to send Juergen Klopp’s side into seventh heaven with an angled shot.

Afterwards Gakpo said: ‘Everybody told me a lot about this game before so I knew it was a big game, we put in a good performance. 

‘I think we were just determined, eager to keep going, we got enough chances and it’s amazing we scored seven. We just have to keep going now. 

Reflecting on the goal that gave Liverpool the lead, the winger said: ‘It was amazing, I was on the side, even he [Andy Robertson] told me go in behind. 

‘I make the run, it’s a brilliant pass I just have to take a touch inside and score. We were really determined to keep on going, keep on scoring, but also keep on defending. 

‘It’s a new front three except for Mo, it’s a little bit difficult in the beginning because the old three were so used to each other. 

‘My second goal was the most beautiful but my first was the most important.’
