Frank Lampard admits Gareth Bale will see Tottenham challenge Chelsea

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted Tottenham will challenge his side this season once Gareth Bale has signed.

Spurs struggled at times last season while Lampard’s Blues finished in the top four of the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League.

Bale is expected to be confirmed by Tottenham imminently with the Welshman returning to north London from Real Madrid.

He was one of the best players in the Premier League before leaving for the Spanish capital in 2013.

And Lampard is backing Bale to recapture that form and help push Tottenham back towards the top of the table.

Asked about the Wales international, the Chelsea boss responded: "Gareth Bale is an incredible player, he is an incredible individual talent that we remember very well from his Premier League days at Tottenham.

"We have seen from afar the incredible success that he has had at Real Madrid and if he does come to Tottenham which I keep seeing will virtually happen soon then he is going to be a big addition to their squad, of course.

  • Gareth Bale return crucial for Harry Kane and Man Utd should have battled Tottenham

"Of course, they have got very good individuals at Tottenham. They will beat teams and be expected to challenge in and around the Champions League places and above.

"They have fantastic individuals and if they get Gareth Bale, they will have another one for sure.

“He is one of the best players in the world, in my opinion, over the last four or five seasons.”

Bale is expected to join Tottenham on loan initially with Spurs to pay around 40 per cent of the forward’s wages.

Should Tottenham take up the option of a second season, he will stay until the end of his Real Madrid contract, which expires in the summer of 2022.

Tottenham play their second match of the Premier League season this weekend as they take on Southampton.
