Five Championship free agents Wrexham could sign including ex-Man Utd double act

Wrexham are back in the Football League and if they want to secure back-to-back promotions, Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will have to dig their hands deep into their pockets this summer after the Red Dragons confirmed they were releasing 11 players at the end of a gruelling season. Prolific goalscoring hero Paul Mullin has already signed a one-year contract extension and Phil Parkinson has already confirmed talks are ongoing with goalkeeper Ben Foster over the possibility of extending his stay in Wales.

But beyond that, there is an appreciation that Wrexham will have to continue improving and evolving their team if they’re serious about achieving promotion from League Two next season.

There have already been whispers of some audacious and ambitious transfer targets including Cheltenham hot-shot Alfie May and Blackburn’s Sorba Thomas but Wrexham will have to ensure they shop smartly to avoid upsetting the current team dynamic.

The playing squad and staff are now set to endure some downtime following an energy-sapping campaign that finished with a big party in Las Vegas before the hard work begins in pre-season when the club will be touring the United States.

Meanwhile, Express Sport has run the rule over some of the available free-agents from the Championship that could represent intriguing opportunities for both Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in the transfer market.

Tyler Blackett

Ex-Manchester United defender Blackett returned to the Championship with Rotherham on a short-term deal in March following a spell in the MLS with Cincinnati.

The left-footed centre-back, who can also play at full-back, is looking for a new challenge this summer when he is expected to be released by The Millers.

Blackett is best remembered for his brief spell in the Manchester United first-team under Louis van Gaal in the 2014/15 season when he was sent off against Leicester in a 5-3 defeat.

That said, he is vastly experienced in British football having featured for Blackpool, Birmingham, Celtic, Reading and Nottingham Forest.

At 29, he could be worth the investment if he is willing to drop down to League Two.

Nick Powell

Powell is another ex-Man United player who is on the lookout for a new challenge following the end of his contract with Stoke.

The attacking midfielder made over 100 appearances in a four-year spell with the Potters and is vastly experienced at Championship level.

The 29-year-old was once considered to be a top prospect but his career has somewhat dwindled in the past few years despite making 25 Championship appearances this season.

He is already attracting interest from other Football League clubs meaning it would take a special offer from Wrexham to entice him into the move.

Ben Woodburn

This one seems highly unlikely given Woodburn is only 23 but it appears he is set to leave Preston at the end of the season.

The former Liverpool prospect, who scored for the Reds in the League Cup against Leeds under Jurgen Klopp, is said to be on course to sign for a League One side next season.

Woodburn has previously enjoyed spells with Sheffield United, Oxford, Blackpool and Hearts but has failed to fulfil his potential after making six appearances for Liverpool’s first-team.

It’s a signing that is probably out of reach for Wrexham but if they wanted to make a statement addition, there is no harm in throwing their hat into the ring if he really is due to leave Preston.

Rolando Aarons

You may remember Aarons from his time at Newcastle when he caught the eye with his tricky dribbling skills but again, he is another player that failed to live up the hype.

Aarons is due to be released by Huddersfield Town at the end of the season meaning his signature is well and truly up for grabs.

The 27-year-old has endured a rocky time in the last few years having barely featured for the Terriers either side of a loan spell with Motherwell.

Nonetheless, he still has more to offer and he could be a sensational pickup for the Red Dragons if they were able to convince him to join their project.

The winger has also had spells with Hellas Verona, Slovan Liberec, Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe throughout his career and has also earned two caps for Jamaica at international level.

Gary Madine

Madine is set to leave Blackpool at the end of the season having scored four times in 27 Championship outings this season.

However, he is now looking for a new challenge this summer as he is due to leave the Tangerines following their relegation to League One.

He could prove to be the perfect strike partner for Mullin in attack as he has huge pedigree in English football having also featured for Carlisle, Rochdale, Coventry City, Chesterfield, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton, Cardiff and Sheffield United.

Convincing Madine to drop down to League Two is a challenge within itself but if Wrexham were able to get him onboard, he could provide the firepower to drive the Red Dragons to another promotion with Mullin.
