Running a successful fantasy football team takes as much skill as bossing a real club.
Statistical analysis of one million teams in the Fantasy Premier League game has shown top players share the same qualities as coaches such as Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Liverpool ’s Jurgen Klopp.
Joseph O’Brien, of the University of Limerick in Ireland, ran the study using machine learning and believes a fantasy team’s success is not down to chance.
He revealed: “The English Premier League is hectic, with the best teams playing a lot of games in Europe.
“You have a really good opportunity to tailor your squad towards those games where the players are often played twice or not at all – and take advantage of that.”
After he began applying the tricks he learnt during his research, his fantasy team shot up from around 100,000th to 8,000th.
What fantasy football players don’t have, though, is trophies in their cabinets.
Klopp has clinched four trophies as Liverpool manager within the past two years.
The Champions League was lifted in 2019 when they beat Tottenham in the final after miraculously coming back from three goals down in their semi-final tie with Barcelona.
They then claimed the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Premier League title last season.
Guardiola, meanwhile, is hunting a sensational quadruple this term at the Etihad.

Winning the Premier League title this season looks inevitable following their record-breaking run of 20 straight wins in all competitions.
But European glory is what Guardiola desires most – something Fantasy Football players can only dream of.
