The Europa League last-32 clash between Red Bull Salzburg and Eintracht Frankfurt has been postponed due to a HURRICANE expected to arrive in the Austrian city.

Frankfurt lead 4-1 from the first leg last week and have headed across the border to defend their advantage on Thursday night, but the match is now off.

Both clubs confirmed the news on Twitter on Thursday afternoon, citing the hurricane heading for Salzburg and expected 75mph winds.

The Europa League match between Salzburg and Frankfurt is off amid a hurricane warning

Eintracht Frankfurt led the tie 4-1 after an impressive victory in the first leg last Thursday

In a statement on their website, Salzburg wrote: ‘Due to a hurricane warning for tonight, with gusts of up to 120 km/h being forecast, FC Red Bull Salzburg’s UEFA Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt had to be cancelled today.

‘This decision had to be made by the local security authorities at a recent crisis meeting, which included UEFA and representatives of the two clubs, local authorities and the Salzburg police.

‘Due to the extreme gusts of wind forecast for the greater Salzburg area, a safe departure and a safe stay on the stadium site – neither for the spectators nor for the people working at this sold-out event (29,000) – could not be guaranteed.

‘The new date for this game will be communicated as soon as possible.’

The last 16 round of matches in the tournament are scheduled for March 12 and 19, meaning the rescheduled round of 32 clash will likely take place next week.
