Tottenham defender Danny Rose only discovered he would not be part of Jose Mourinho ’s squad this season when he was left out of the club’s squad-number announcement on Friday.
Rose, 30, spent the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle after being deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho.
Reports suggest the Magpies will not be signing him on a permanent basis, meaning he has since returned to Spurs with a year remaining on his contract.
Nevertheless, the left-back’s time in north London will almost certainly be coming to an end this summer, as his name was nowhere to be seen when Spurs confirmed their 2020/21 squad numbers on Friday.
According to The Athletic , Rose was not made aware of this decision before it was revealed to the public.
After returning from Newcastle the England international was told he would not be part of Spurs’ first-team squad, given Mourinho already has Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon and 18-year-old Dennis Cirkin to choose from at left-back.
Yet he is understood to have known nothing about losing his No.3 shirt until receiving a phone call from someone who had seen the news on television.
Rose pulled Mourinho for a heated discussion before joining Newcastle in January, which can be seen in full on the club’s fly-on-the-wall Amazon documentary ‘All or Nothing’.
The defender asked to speak with Mourinho after being left out his side on a number of occasions and said: “Gaffer, I just want to know exactly what the problem is.”
When the Spurs boss asked what he meant, Rose replied: “You know exactly what I mean, how I'm being treated.

“I was very excited when you came as manager, but if you don't want me to play, I'd rather you just tell me now, and I'll stay at home, and I'll train at home.”
After Mourinho tried to justify picking youngster Japhet Tanganga ahead of him, Rose stormed out of his office and said: “It's facts. The whole changing room know it's facts. And I'm going to see Daniel [Levy] as well, so when Daniel's in tell him I'm looking for him.”
