Chelsea fear Ben Chilwell could miss rest of season after suspected ACL injury

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of star man Ben Chilwell with the flying full-back suffering a suspected ACL injury in the 4-0 win over Juventus in the Champions League.

The England international was substituted with 19 minutes to play against the Old Lady and needed help from club physios to limp towards the touchline.

A long-term injury to Chilwell would be a huge blow for Thomas Tuchel with the 24-year-old a key part of his preferred 3-4-3 system.

The full-back has started the last six Premier League matches, netting three goals and shipping just two in that period.

But now The Sun claim Chilwell could miss the rest of the season.

The report states that the damage to his knee could have ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament which could mean a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Scans have been taken to assess the scale of the problem but Chelsea may opt for a second set once the initial swelling has died down.

Only then will the medical team be able to give a full diagnosis and proceed with a rehabilitation programme.

But if it is the ACL that Chilwell has ruptured, he could expect to face a minimum of six months out.

The injury will not only come as a blow to Thomas Tuchel but to Gareth Southgate in the England camp as well.

Chilwell received heavy praise for his performance against Albania, playing the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions put five past their Group I opponents.

A damaged ACL would mean he faces a race against time to be included for the World Cup squad in Qatar next November.
