Chelsea face New Year fixture chaos as Covid-19 threatens Morecambe FA Cup tie

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea may not play another match for up to two weeks with their upcoming games in major doubt.

The Blues are due to host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday (4.30pm).

But Pep Guardiola’s side have experienced a Covid-19 outbreak within their squad over the past week.

And that resulted in their game against Everton on Monday being called off.

City’s training ground is currently shut, meaning the trip to Stamford Bridge on January 3 is unlikely to happen as players are isolating.

Chelsea’s next game is set to be Morecambe, but the League Two club have now had to close their training ground too.

Covid-19 is plaguing at host of sides in the English football pyramid.

And Morecambe have now entered a period of self-isolation for the affected players and staff, which began on December 28.

A club statement from them read: “The decision follows detailed conversations today with both Club and EFL medical staff.

“The club informed the EFL that they would be unable to fulfil the fixtures following recent positive Covid-19 tests and the requirement for players and staff to self-isolate for 10 days as per EFL and Government guidance in order to mitigate against the risk of further infection.”

Football Secretary and Director Mick Horton added: “It is very disappointing that we have had to make this decision but the welfare of our players, staff and opponents remains the number one priority and following detailed conversations with the relevant authorities we have also decided to close our training ground for 10 days as well.

“On behalf of the club I wish all those affected a swift and speedy recovery.”

Should that game need to rearranged, it will cause fixture chaos with few dates available in the already hectic calendar.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s next game after Morecambe is away to Fulham on January 15, who are another side suffering with Covid-19 issues.

The west London derby should go ahead, but their game against Tottenham tonight has been postponed due to a number of positive cases at Fulham.
