Chelsea boss Pochettino ‘proposes swap deal’ to complete priority signing

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly proposed a swap deal in a bid to land top target Andre Onana. The Argentine is claimed to be prepared to send Edouard Mendy to Inter Milan in part exchange for the Cameroon goalkeeper.

Pochettino was announced as Chelsea’s new boss last Monday. He will not officially start in the role until July 1.

However, he is already having a say on the club’s transfer business. Chelsea could be set for a number of high-profile departures.

Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic are closing in on moves to Manchester United and Manchester City respectively. Pochettino will attempt to decrease the size of his squad in his first window in charge.

However, he will also look to make signings of his own despite over £600million being spent in the last 12 months. One position that he will look to prioritise is in goal.

Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana shows off skill in training

Kepa Arrizabalaga was Chelsea’s No 1 for the majority of the season as Mendy suffered with form and injury. Pochettino has seemingly decided that neither goalkeeper is up to the standard he requires.

Onana has been linked with Chelsea for several weeks. French outlet Foot Mercato claims the 27-year-old is the No 1 choice for Pochettino.

Chelsea don’t want to be left with three highly-paid goalkeepers so will look to offload one of them. It appears Mendy will be the player to go, with the same report claiming the Senegal star has been offered to Inter as part of a potential deal for Onana.

Chelsea want to offer cash plus Mendy to sign Onana. It is suggested Mendy’s recent change of agent will help Chelsea’s cause.

The 31-year-old is now represented by Fali Ramadani, who is well-established in the Italian market. Ramadani is also the agent of Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who spent eight years in Serie A with Napoli.

Onana only joined Inter last summer on a free transfer following his exit from Ajax. He has played a key role in the club’s run to the Champions League final.

But next Saturday’s showpiece match against Manchester City could be his final outing in an Inter shirt. Meanwhile, Mendy has made just one appearance so far in 2023.

He suffered a finger injury after the World Cup and wasn’t able to regain his place from Kepa. It has been some fall from grace for Mendy, who was named Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper in January 2022.
