Liverpool are at risk of throwing away their own Premier League title chances.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were joined on 33 points at the top of the table by Manchester United following their win over Aston Villa, having led by 13 points at the same stage last season.
Jamie Carragher has now pointed out that the only reason his former side might not retain their title would be because of injuries, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip currently sidelined.
The former England defender has since offered the Reds some advice as the January transfer window begins, and what he has suggested won’t come as a great shock to supporters.
“Jurgen Klopp will be cursing a missed opportunity if Liverpool do not retain their title,” he told the Telegraph.
“Liverpool are the best team in England, but circumstances have opened the door for everyone with dreams of catching them.
“I felt at the start of the season that the only thing that could stop Liverpool was injuries.
“In August, my fear was that a setback for one of the front three might see them fall back into the pack. The club addressed that with the signing of Diogo Jota. Now my concern is focused on their defensive issues.
"The injury to Virgil Van Dijk alone will cost Liverpool between nine and 12 points over the course of this season.
“Although Fabinho has proved a fantastic deputy at the back, Joel Matip’s ongoing problems means, to me at least, that it is inconceivable that Liverpool will not sign another centre-half at the earliest opportunity.”
One postive for Liverpool is the current progress of Van Dijk, with the club deciding to send a physio out to join the 29-year-old at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex in Dubai.
Klopp said of Van Dijk: "Good, very good. I have no problem with talking about Virgil van Dijk.
“It’s very good but still a long way to go, that’s this kind of injury.
"I’m happy when I see these videos, to be honest, because it just shows that he makes good progress.”
