Callum Hudson-Odoi sends message to Frank Lampard after England U21 win

Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi said he felt like he was getting back to his best after starring for the England Under-21s in their comprehensive 3-1 victory over Andorra.

The 20-year-old has struggled for regular playing time at Chelsea this season, making just four starts in all competitions for Frank Lampard’s new-look side.

But Hudson-Odoi has seized his opportunity when given the chance, finding the net against West Brom and Krasnodar this term, and the youngster will have been desperate to send a message to Lampard while representing his country in last night’s EURO U21 qualifier.

The attacker started brightly at Molineaux, putting the ball on a plate for Curtis Jones who made no mistake from close range to break the deadlock in the 27th minute.

Garcia Gonzalez equalised from the penalty spot right on half-time for the visitors before Watford’s Ben Wilmot restored the Young Lions’ lead with a powerful header.

Hudson-Odoi put the hosts out of sight with a spot-kick of his own in the 65th minute and there were signs the winger could finally returning to the sort of form that has so often seen him touted as a future superstar.

Asked about his long journey back from his previous Achilles injury, Hudson-Odoi told BT Sport: ‘I feel like I’m still improving, I’m still trying to get more strength in the calf which I lost a lost of muscle from.

‘But I feel like I’m getting back to my best and hopefully sooner or later I’ll be back to normal as I was before.

‘I just want to keep improving, keep working hard daily and keep getting better day-by-day.’

Hudson-Odoi hopes he can work his way back into the senior set-up if he continues to impress for Chelsea and the U21 side.

‘Of course you want to be in the senior team, you want to be competing up there every time,’ he added.

‘But, no matter what level I’m playing at, I want to try my best and work hard every day and hopefully get into the seniors.

‘If it’s going up and down, I want to make sure I stay up there so want to keep working hard, keep my mentality strong.’
