Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho were among several past and present Manchester United and England team-mates to react on social media after Marcus Rashford’s show-stealing performance against Wales on Tuesday. Rashford netted a second-half brace on either side of Phil Foden’s strike in a 3-0 win made in Manchester at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.

The result saw England top Group B at the 2022 World Cup, setting up a last-16 clash with Senegal on Sunday. And Rashford has handed Gareth Southgate a selection headache ahead of the knockout clash after becoming the tournament’s joint-top goalscorer with three goals.

After starting over the rested Raheem Sterling, the 25-year-old fired England ahead in the 50th minute with a stunning free-kick – the first direct free-kick goal of the winter showcase in Qatar. Foden added a second just a minute later before Rashford’s 68th-minute solo effort rounded off the victory.

After full-time, Rashford took to Instagram to post an image of his celebration, captioning it: “Last 16 here we come.” And several fellow United stars, including World Cup rivals, dived into his comments to hype up his latest eye-catching performance.

Fernandes, also enjoying an excellent World Cup for Portugal, wrote: “The man is on [fire].” Tyrell Malacia, whose Netherlands side will face Group B runners-up USA in the last 16, commented: Rashyy [three fire emojis].” Garnacho added two fire emojis of his own, joining figures like Ian Wright, Stormzy and Angel Gomes hailing him.

Rashford also posted two further images, one with his family in the stands after the game and another with his Man of the Match award. And they attracted more praise from the likes of Wayne Rooney, Phil Foden, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard.

Southgate now has a big decision to make against Senegal, with Sterling only considered rested rather than dropped against Wales. The Three Lions boss will be obliged to hand Rashford back-to-back starts but could be tempted to revert back to his tried and tested front three.

Foden is also knocking on the door to keep his starting spot, but it would likely condemn Bukayo Saka to an extended stay on the bench. But Rashford, firmly in the World Cup Golden Boot race with Kylian Mbappe, Cody Gakpo and others, will particularly hope he has done enough to warrant a stay in the side.
