Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson reportedly sacked his chauffeur after his wife had been sent an abusive text.

The Sun report that Gerry Glover called Polly Gibson “f*** nuts” in a text and was made redundant from his job.

Though judge Andrea Pitt branded the redundancy explanation a “sham” at an employment tribunal and ruled that Mr Glover was unfairly dismissed.

Glover is also believed to have claimed Mrs Gibson was “taking the p*ss” when she messaged asking for a lift.

The 53-year-old driver then sent another text apologising and claiming he was referring to his dog, though she replied: “I think the damage is done”.

The tribunal heard that Glover’s text was forwarded on to Boro chief Gibson, who replied with a thumbs-up.

Gibson went on to make Glover redundant, telling him he no longer needed a driver though The Sun add he took on a chauffeur after Mr Glover departed.

Compensation will be decided later with the judge ruling that the real reason for the dismissal as misconduct for the “f*** nuts” text.

Daily Star Sport have contacted Championship side Middlesbrough for comment.

Gibson is a lifelong Middlesbrough fan and joined the board as the club's youngest ever director at the age of 26.

He succeeded Colin Henderson as the club's chairman in 1994, owning roughly 90 per cent of the club.

Gibson previously called for "decisive" action to prevent EFL clubs from going to the wall amid the coronavirus pandemic.
