Belgium 2-0 England player ratings: Grealish shines on sorry night for Dier

England's Nations League hopes were ended by Belgium on Sunday as two first-half goals ensured the Three Lions cannot progress from their group.

Youri Tielemans fired Belgium into an early lead, as his long-range effort deflected off Tyrone Mings past Jordan Pickford.

Soon after the hosts had doubled their advantage, after Declan Rice was harshly penalised for an adjudged foul on Kevin De Bruyne outside the box.

Dries Mertens lifted the ball up and over the wall to leave Pickford no chance and put Belgium well in command with just 23 minutes on the clock, from which England never recovered.

Here are John Cross's player ratings.

England

Pickford 6

You could not blame him for the goals, but little is going his way.

Walker 6

Played fairly well on the right of a back three. His passing let him down.

Dier 5

Suffered a knock in the warm-up, had a poor game, sloppy passing.

Mings 6

First goal deflected off him and past Pickford. Unlucky as otherwise solid.

Trippier 6

Got better as the game wore on but went off after suffering a bang in the face.

Rice 6

Harsh free kick against him for second goal. But do you need two holding players?

Henderson 5

England need his quality and experience but only lasted 45 minutes.

Chilwell 5

Struggled and eventually came off injured. Stop start season. Saka better.

Mount 7

Slowly establishing himself in starting line-up, looks at home at this level.

Grealish 8

England's best player by some distance. What an entertainer. Class act.

Kane 7

His 50th cap, so unlucky not to score when had a header cleared off the line.

Substitutes

Saka, for Chilwell, 38 mins, 7

Winks, for Henderson, 46 mins, 7

Sancho, for Trippier, 70 mins

Calvert-Lewin, for Mount, 70 mins

Belgium

Courtois 7

England gave Courtois problems from set pieces. Courtois saved well from Kane.

Alderweireld 6

Booked. Given a testing night by England’s pressing but Belgium still came through.

Denayer 6

Looking more comfortable with each game for Belgium, imposing presence.

Vertonghen 7

Smiling at the pre-match coin toss as he faced Kane. Quickly down to business.

Meunier 6

Booked. Played as right wing back, looks better defensively than in attack.

Witsel 7

Booked. Powerful presence in midfield, bossed the middle area and strong in tackle.

Tielemans 7

The Leicester midfielder just gets better. Scored and broke forward with menace.

T Hazard 7

Played out on the left, the other Hazard got forward from the wing back role.

Mertens 7

Veteran midfielder despatched wonderful free kick for Belgium’s second goal.

De Bruyne 7

Lovely moments, such a class act and is the reason why Belgium are No1.

Lukaku 8

MotM. Set one up, headed off the line, hugely influential, haunting Man United again.
