Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has suggested that the club should attempt to re-sign Thiago Alcantara from Liverpool.
Huge things were expected of the Spanish midfielder when he was signed by the Reds for a fee of £27m in the summer.
But so far things have not worked out for the playmaker, who initially struggled with injury issues and has since been criticised for his performances in a Liverpool shirt.
Thiago bid an emotional farewell to Bayern in September, and their CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recounted how he broke down in tears when he left.
And speaking to Sky Germany, Matthaus suggested that reaction shows Thiago would not rule out a return to the Champions League holders.
"How about Bayern bring Thiago back to Munich?" he said. "He’s not getting on at Liverpool and in Munich he is missed by Hansi Flick and the fans.
"Anyone who says goodbye to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge so emotionally, the door is certainly never completely closed."
Thiago did impress in Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League last-16 first leg victory over RB Leipzig on Tuesday, however, and a sensational return to Bayern any time soon looks unlikely.
Reds captain Jordan Henderson recently launched a fierce defence of Thiago, and thinks he has a hugely promising future at Anfield.
"Thiago has been brilliant since he came to the club," he said.
"I think everybody knows how good a player he is. He's a world-class player and he's been great to have around.
"Even off the field, he's a really good person, leads by example, gives everything and you can learn a lot from him. I think he's been a fantastic addition to the squad.
"He's a phenomenal player and hopefully he can just keep improving each time he plays for us and getting used to the way we play as a team."
