Southend’s 101-year spell in the Football League has come to an end despite their 2-1 win against Barrow.

The Shrimpers travelled to Holker Street in the knowledge that not only would failure to win result in relegation to the National League, but they could still win and go down if Scunthorpe and Colchester avoided defeat.

Southend won 2-1 courtesy of goals from John White and Terrell Egbri to cancel out Scott Quigley’s opener – but results elsewhere ensured the victory was academic.

Scunthorpe earned a point at Bradford in a goalless draw while Colchester United secured a 1-0 win at home to Salford City, sealing Southend’s fate and a second successive relegation.

The Essex club had been in the drop zone for the majority of the season, barring the second half of February, and though former boss Phil Brown returned on April 9 and collected five points from his first four games, he was unable to keep them in the EFL.
