Barcelona ace Lionel Messi sheds light on "very bad" injury problem

Lionel Messi admits he has aggravated his calf problem by rushing back into Barcelona training too quickly.

The Argentinian, 32, has not featured for Barca this term as he continues to recover from the knock.

Ernesto Valverde’s side have struggled without their talisman, winning just one of the last eight matches he has missed since November.

Valverde had claimed that Messi would be available for selection after the international break.

Yet Spanish outlet AS believe the Catalans skipper has now been ruled out of Saturday’s La Liga clash with Valencia, while he is also a doubt to play in next week’s Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund.

In an exclusive interview with Sport , Messi has shed light on his current injury nightmare – insisting it was initially “very bad”.

“I feel better. The truth is that it was very bad because in the first training this happened to me,” he said.

“It was something simple. I was 15 days and, when I thought I was fine, in one of the training sessions before Betis I resented a little and it opened a little more.

“That made me have to stand still longer and I have to stand still now.

“I was told that this is only complicated, that it seemed fine and treacherous. I had never been through this and now I know what it is.

“That is why I am calm and I will play when I really feel that I am safe and it does not happen again because a relapse would be for much longer.”

Messi has all but confirmed he will not be in action against Valencia this Saturday, but he has left the door open to an appearance against Dortmund.

When asked when he will return for Barca, he replied: “I am training alone yet. I have no definite date.

“I’m getting tested. When one hundred percent cured.

“Against Valencia, I'm sure I am not there and we will see if I return against Borussia or against Granada. I have no definite date.”
