Atletico Madrid 1-0 Barcelona: Carrasco piles on more Barca misery

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Barcelona: Yannick Carrasco strike piles more misery on Ronald Koeman’s side who saw Gerard Pique limp off injured in defeat that leaves them TENTH in LaLiga

  • Yannick Carrasco scored opener after bizarre Marc Ander ter-Stegen error
  • Gerard Pique limps off the pitch in tears for Barcelona after collecting injury
  • Barcelona starting XI: Ter Stegen, Sergi Roberto, Pique (Dest), Lenglet, Alba, Pjanic, De Jong, Pedri (Coutinho), Dembele, Griezmann, Messi
  • Atletico Madrid starting XI: Oblak, Trippier, Savic, Gimenez, Hermoso, Koke, Saul, Llorente (Costa), Carrasco, Felix, Correa
  • Atletico Madrid have started the season well and are in the title race
  • Barcelona meanwhile have stumbled to mid-table after taking 11 points from 21

Barcelona suffered a nightmare evening at Atletico Madrid after going down 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano and losing key defender Gerard Pique to injury.

Yannick Carrasco scored the game’s only goal on the cusp of half-time when 40 yards from goal a brilliant bit of skill saw him nutmeg the far advanced Marc-Andre ter Stegen before he slotted home into an empty net.

Ronald Koeman’s side rarely troubled the hosts and the Dutch manager will now be sweating over the injury suffered to key defender Pique who limped off close to tears in the second half with a suspected knee injury.

Barcelona’s latest defeat leaves them tenth in the table after their first LaLiga loss against Atletico in ten years, who go joint top.

Host commentator

90+1min: As five minutes are added on, even Roberto cannot continie. Barca are down to 10 men…

89min: Sergi Roberto sees a shot deflected just wide of the top corner but he appears to have pulled his thigh muscle in doing so. He will limp on for now though – he has little choice. Barca have no more subs.

86min: Nothing from Barcelona… they are really heading for a winter of discontent it seems.

83min: Two more changes for Barcelona. Off comes Griezmann and Miralem Pjanic as Martin Braithwaite and Trincao come on.

For Atlei, Joao Felix departs along with Angel Correa as they are replaced by Thomas Lemar and Geoffrey Kondogbia.

81min: Panic over for the hosts. Lionel Messi’s free-kick takes a deflection wide before Atleti clear the corner.

79min: Fury among the Atleti players as Gimenez appears to win the ball with a challenge on Messi, only to be penalised in giving away a free-kick 25 yards out. He is booked for dissent as is Stefan Savic.

76min: Atleti are just 15 minutes away from their first league win over Barcelona in 10 years. They are not safe yet with just a one-goal lead no matter how comfortable they look. Coutinho wins a free-kick despite tripping over his own feet but nothing comes from it.

73min: It may even get worse for Barcelona’s defence… everyone’s favourite wind up merchant Diego Costa is coming on for Marcos Llorente.

70min: They are not even attacking anymore. Atletico are going for the kill with a second goal as Carrasco drills an effort just wide across goal after cutting inside into the box.

67min: What a mess Barcelona are looking in right now. Pique seemingly out long term, (one fit centre-back in Lenglet?) Messi has faded out of the game, Griezmann has hardly been in it. This really could be a long season at the Nou Camp.

64min: Dembele goes close for Barca but they are still struggling to cause many problems for Atleti.

61min: How’s your luck, Ronald Koeman? Gerard Pique is the victim of an unfortunate challenge but either way he limps off in a lot of pain. He isn’t coming back on, and judging by the pain he is, that could keep him sidelined for a while. He is pretty much in tears. On comes Sergino Dest.

58min: Chance for Barcelona! Messi plays a wonderful cross into the box for Clement Lenglet, who on his own six yards out can only nod straight at Jan Oblak.

57min: Kieran ‘Beckham’ Trippier plays a wonderful long cross into the box which is inch perfect for Joao Felix but before the forward can get on the end of it, sweeper keeper Ter Stegen is quick off his line to gather. That error before the break has clearly not put him off. On comes Coutinho for Pedri.

54min: Barcelona are already preparing their first change in fact. Philippe Coutinho looks like he is preparing to come on.

51min: And still nothing from Barca. They don’t seem to have too much idea going forward aside from play it out to the right and hope for the best. Antoine Griezmann has hardly had a kick since the second minute.

48min: Not too much urgency at the start of the half for Barca. In fact it’s Atleti pushing for a second goal. I’m scratching my head here, this isn’t in the Diego Simeone playbook.

Atleti restart – no changes from either side.

Much in part to Ter Stegen going on walkabouts of course. I’m still scratching my head over why he was so far out his goal. It was excellent play for Carrasco to nutmeg him before applying the finish though. Atleti are now 45 minutes away from beating Barcelona in a LaLiga game for over 10 years.

45+3min: What on earth is Ter Stegen doing here. In the final minute of stoppage time, Atleti win the ball in their own half before breaking forward. The ball finds Yannick Carrasco, who 40 yards out is stunned to find he is being charged down by the Barca keeper. After calmly taking the ball around him, he rolls into the empty net from distance. Bizare way to end the half!

45+1min: Three minutes of stoppage time at the end of a first half which has died down after an excellent start.

44min: Slight concerns for Barca. Dembele lands awkwardly on his shoulder following a tangle with Carrasco and he needs some treatment before continuing. He doesn’t look comfortable but he will continue for now.

41min: Now Alba is showing what he can do in the other penalty box! He plays a wonderful through ball for Lionel Messi inside the box but from an acute angle he can only force a decent save from Jan Oblak. Pedri was an option inside the box, but who are we to question when Messi should or should not shoot?

38min: Now it’s Barcelona’s turn to flex their defensive strength. Carrasco escapes down the left, and his low ball into the box looks destined to be tapped in by Angel Correa before Jordi Alba makes a crucial interception.

35min: Half chance but nothing more than that for Atleti as Saul drives well wide across goal from 25 yards.

That Hermoso yellow card? It was in fact in him getting rescinded a yellow as it was he that was booked and not Carrasco earlier. So still just the two bookings for Atleti.

32min: The yellow cards are startig to add up now for Atletico as Mario Hermoso is now booked for what looks like a foul that occured earlier when advantage was played. I’ll let you know if that’s not the case.

29min: No drama on the pitch right now, so here is a wonderful image of that old trickster Lionel Messi doing what he does best in weaving past defenders like training cones.

26min: Carrasco is now the latest man into the book after a cynical trip on Sergi Roberto. It’s gone a bit scrappy after an excellent first 15 minutes.

24min: Having said that Barcelona have not really looked that dangerous inside the box since that Griezmann chance in the first few seconds.

21min: We have not seen too much from Atleti since Llorente hit the crossbar. I was hoping up to that point that we were seeing a new free flowing style from Simeone. Just a false dawn by the look of it. They are still in the bunker defending.

18min: Barcelona are starting to dictate the midfield but as ever against a Diego Simeone side, trying to find gaps in a backline is proving rather difficult. Hosts are looking well organised at the back.

15min: Such as enjoyable first 15 minutes. Lionel Messi plays Demebele into space again down the right but with Griezmann waiting inside the box for a cross and a tap-in, Dembele’s low ball is crucially turned behind for a corner – one Atleti clear.

12min: Off the bar. Atleti’s football has been outstanding so far. A slick passing move finds Marcos Llorente inside the box but his rising drive crashes off the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

9min: Only one way to stop Dembele so far, foul him. Koke purposefully stops an attack by pulling him down on the corner of the penalty box to pick up the game’s first yellow card.

6min: Cracking start to this game. Now Atleti build down the left where Yannick Carrasco squares for Saul Niguez 25 yards, whose first time top corner bound strike is very well beaten behind by Marc Ander ter-Stegen.

3min: Half-chance for Barca. Ousmane Dembele makes a wonderful run to receive a pass on the right flank before he plays a cross to the near post. Former Atleti star Antoine Griezmann gets on the end of it but under heavy pressure he can only divert it over the crossbar.

Lionel Messi and former Atleti playmaker Antoine Griezmann looked well prepared in the warm up.

Atletico Madrid CAN still hurt Barcelona without Luis Suarez… Joao Felix is LaLiga’s brightest star right now as he thrives in Diego Simeone’s new attacking set-up and Diego Costa’s return from injury is timely

Incredibly it’s been 10 years since Atletico Madrid defeated Barcelona in the league. Will today be the day?

Barcelona of course have two games in hand with many of the teams above them – three with Villarreal so we can expect them to make a march from 10th.

Big opportunity for Atletico though who can go top with a rare win over Barca.

Of course the headline there is Real Madrid dropping points again with a 1-1 draw at Villarreal. It was the hosts who will perhaps be ruing the result more though as they miss out on the chance to go top.
