Arsenal reportedly remain interested in highly-rated RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, who has been tipped to be better than his team-mate Dayot Upamecano.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has eight centre-back at his disposal but by next summer they could be down to five with Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz's contracts all expiring.
Calum Chambers may also depart for a new club where he can get more regular minutes after falling down the pecking order following a serious knee injury.
It means a new defender could be one of Arsenal's targets in 2021 and Leipzig stars Konate and Upamecano are two of the most wanted players in Europe.
According to German publication Bild, Konate's release clause is £45million which could stretch Arsenal's budget.
But if Konate's former boss Ralf Rangnick is to be believed, the French defender will be worth every penny.
"Ibrahima's developed brilliantly here so far and his qualities have led to him becoming an integral member of our defence," Rangnick said in 2019.
"He's only 19, but he already has a lot of experience in the Bundesliga and on the European stage.
"We're convinced of his huge potential and think that he'll take huge strides with us over the coming months and years.
"We're delighted to have agreed an early contract extension."
Upamecano, who is also a target of Liverpool and Manchester United, is pushing for a place in France's team for the European Championship.
