Alternative football rich list – Man Utd fifth based on trophy value, Barcelona only third

Football is no stranger to obscene amounts of money, with star players on astronomical wages and clubs run by oligarch owners keen to spend millions in the transfer market.

Success in the sport also yields further riches, with sports cars and mansions commonplace for those at the top level of the game – while wages further down the pyramid still put the average salary to shame.

But players and managers will always say they’re in the game for trophies, and some are worth far more than others.

New research from F Hinds has revealed which clubs have the most expensive trophy cabinet, based on the value of each individual piece of silverware.

The valuations were conducted based on each trophy’s weight and the value of materials used to make it, including silver, gold and gemstones.

While the Champions League is often considered the most prestigious award in Europe, the trophy itself is made of sterling silver and is priced at just £3,157.

In contrast, the German DFB-Pokal cup is valued at a staggering £89,805 due to the gold-plated silver encrusted with 12 tourmalines, 12 rock crystals, 18 nephrites and a solid green nephrite in the centre.

Next most valuable is the Bundesliga trophy, valued at £44,902 with the 11kg shield set with five 71.98 carat, gold-encased tourmaline cabochons.

Therefore, it is no surprise that Bayern Munich top the alternative rich list – despite having fewer competition victories than their rivals – due to winning the Bundesliga 29 times and the DFB-Pokal on 19 occasions.

Real Madrid are the world’s richest club but the Spanish giants are well behind Bayern for trophy cabinet value, with their haul totalling £454,511.48

The Premier League is the third most-valuable trophy at £7,443 while the Community Shield is bottom of the scale with an estimated cost of just £1,768.

Manchester United’s total haul of 66 trophies has been valued at £230,376.80, putting them fifth on the overall European list, well ahead of domestic rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.
