THE Sydney Roosters could be forced to take some of their 2019 home games to Gosford due to potential clashes with the AFL after the NRL’s draw was released on Thursday.
The defending premiers have five home games allocated to the SCG — including four in the first eight rounds — but another five are scheduled as TBA as the league waits on the AFL schedule given the Sydney Swans have priority over their traditional home ground.
It comes on the same day Parramatta secured an agreement with the new $300 million Western Sydney Stadium, with the Eels set to open the ground against the Wests Tigers on Easter Monday.
If the Roosters are unable to play any games at the SCG, it’s anticipated the defending premiers will move games to the Central Coast where they are already locked in to play one game against North Queensland in round 17. The NRL has been working with the AFL on the matter.
“The complexity of the fact that the SCG is host to the Swans as well, the AFL draw hasn’t been finalised,” NRL chief commercial operator Andrew Abdo said. “We expect those games to be played at the SCG, but if there is a clash on an event we can’t control, there will be an opportunity for the Roosters to play the games elsewhere.”
The season will open in Melbourne for the first time since 2009 when they host Brisbane, while the Storm face the Sydney Roosters in a grand final rematch on Good Friday in round six.
The NRL has slated in 17 Sydney derbies on Sunday afternoons, while there will be less 6pm games on Fridays in big stadiums in the city.
Magic round is also a new inclusion, with a full round to be played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane in May.
There is a slight increase on five-day turnarounds from last year, but they are more evenly spread out with no team receiving more than three in their draw.
“We have some blockbuster games in the early rounds of the premiership as well as the final rounds,” NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said. “Sundays in Sydney have been another focus for us.
“The new Western Sydney Stadium is a game changer and the opening match between the Eels and the Wests Tigers should be a wonderful occasion.”

EELS SALVAGE POTENTIAL $300 MILLION DISASTER
THE Parramatta Eels will play their NRL season home games at the new Western Sydney Stadium.
Ten days after the club threatened to walk away from the new $300 million Western Sydney Stadium over a venue-hire cost dispute, the club on Thursday will confirm an 11th hour deal to return to the Parramatta Stadium site next year.
The Daily Telegraph first reported a last-gasp deal will see the Eels’ open the venue with a blockbuster Easter Monday showdown with the Wests Tigers in April.
That report was confirmed when the NRL announced its 2019 season fixture at 11am on Thursday (AEDT).
Venues Live, the operator of the new stadium, had been locked in a cost dispute with the Eels with Parramatta CEO Bernie Gurr threatening to walk away from negotiations after six months.

Gurr also released a letter to members declaring the costs for using the new stadium were “unacceptable” under the terms being negotiated earlier this month.
“It’s still our objective to play there, we just have to make sure it’s on the right terms,” Eels chief executive Bernie Gurr said.
“We want to be fair and reasonable. Historically we haven’t had great deals. Our deal at ANZ is not ideal and we just need to get a fair and reasonable outcome because this is the prime aspect of our business.
“The proposed deal we’ve been offered is not where we need it to be to get the financial outcomes we need.
“We need to make sure we get those reasonable outcomes so we can invest in our football program, our junior footy program and our community initiatives.”
It also follows last week’s announcement that the Wests Tigers have committed to playing four games per season out of the new stadium.

The games at Western Sydney Stadium headlined a huge 2019 season, which will for the first time in NRL history include a Magic Round to be played entirely at Suncorp Stadium in round nine.
The Daily Telegraph had previously revealed the first round of the season and a blockbuster grand final re-match between Cooper Cronk’s Roosters and Cam Smith’s Melbourne Storm to be played on Good Friday at AAMI Park.
The NRL earlier also confirmed several Sydney-based clubs will be taking home games to country NSW in 2019.
Penrith, St George Illawarra and Canberra will all take games to regional NSW as part of next year’s NRL draw.
The NRL confirmed the dates for the Panthers, Dragons and Raiders games in Bathurst, Mudgee and Wagga Wagga respectively, with all to fall in the first 10 rounds of the competition.
Three games were also played in NSW regional centres last year, up by two on previous years following the City-Country fixture being scrapped.
